Why folding and gluing control decides the quality of a rigid box
Paper box folding and edge gluing are dimensional processes, not cosmetic finishing steps. A box that is 0.5 mm out of square can look acceptable on a sample table; at container-load scale, the same deviation becomes a packing problem, a freight problem, and eventually a return problem. This guide explains the control points our QC team works to, the tolerances involved, and what those numbers mean for overseas buyers.
FANHONG produces premium paper boxes and paper bags with FSC-certified paper options. Our quality management system is ISO9001-certified, and where a buyer requires third-party verification, test reports can be arranged through SGS.
Control point 1: incoming paperboard inspection
Folding defects usually start before the board reaches the folder-gluer. Paperboard is checked on receipt for thickness, moisture content, density, and surface condition.
- Thickness: measured with a digital caliper; variation within the same board grade is held to roughly ±0.05 mm.
- Moisture content: typically controlled in the 6-8% range for converting. Board that is too dry can crack at the score; board that is too wet can spring back after folding.
- Surface: coated and laminated surfaces are checked for scuffing and coating adhesion before printing and die-cutting.
For overseas buyers, this step prevents the slow quality drift that appears only after a humid sea crossing: spring-back, edge lifting, and boxes that no longer stack squarely.
Control point 2: die-cutting and score depth
The score line is a controlled material failure. If the score is too shallow, the outer coated surface cracks when folded. If it is too deep, the inner fibers are severed and the corner loses strength.
For a 0.5 mm board, our standard target is a residual thickness of about 0.3 mm at the score line, roughly 60% of board thickness, with a score depth tolerance of about ±0.05 mm. Die condition is logged and checked at the start of each job and periodically during the run.
Buyer impact: consistent scores keep corners closed, prevent visible cracking on luxury surfaces, and reduce the number of boxes that fail a final appearance check.
Control point 3: folding precision on the folder-gluer
On the folder-gluer, belts, guides, and hooks fold the board along the scores. Small changes in belt tension or guide position can push a panel out of square.
- Panel deviation: target within ±0.2 mm.
- Squareness: target within 0.5 mm per meter for many rigid box constructions.
- Monitoring: laser sensors check panel position through the run; operators adjust guides or belt tension before a batch drifts out of tolerance.
Buyer impact: square boxes stack evenly, pack tighter in export cartons, and reduce void volume. For premium packaging, a box that closes flush is part of the unboxing experience, not a cosmetic detail.
Control point 4: glue application control
Edge gluing needs the right amount of adhesive in the right place. Too much glue creates squeeze-out that marks luxury surfaces; too little creates edge lifting that appears days after packing.
- Glue line width: typically 1.5-2.0 mm for the side seam, depending on board and box size.
- Placement tolerance: about ±0.5 mm from the specified glue line.
- Adhesive weight: approximately 0.15-0.25 g per box for many hot-melt applications; the exact target depends on board absorbency and seam length.
- Process control: open time and adhesive temperature are matched to machine speed; automated nozzle purge cycles and pressure sensors reduce the risk of partial blockages and glue skips.
Buyer impact: clean seams, no glue contamination on printed surfaces, and a bond that survives handling and transport instead of failing at the retailer.
Control point 5: final inspection and testing
Final inspection is the last chance to catch a dimensional or bonding defect before export packing.
- Sampling: AQL inspection based on ISO 2859-1, with typical levels of AQL 1.0 for critical defects, 2.5 for major defects, and 4.0 for minor appearance defects.
- Bond testing: fiber tear of at least 80% of the bonded area is a common acceptance target for a good glue bond.
- Dimensional check: box squareness, panel alignment, and internal dimensions checked against the approved sample.
- Traceability: inspection records, board batch, glue batch, and operator information are kept for each production run.
Common defects and corrective actions
| Дефект | Typical root cause | Corrective action | Buyer impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Misaligned folds | Worn die, inconsistent score depth, guide drift | Die inspection log, score depth check, guide reset | Boxes do not stack or close correctly |
| Glue skips | Partial nozzle blockage, low pressure, wrong open time | Purge cycle, pressure sensors, adhesive temperature check | Edge lifting and returns after packing |
| Squeeze-out | Excess adhesive, placement drift | Reduce glue weight, verify pattern position | Marks on printed or laminated surfaces |
| Surface cracking | Shallow score, dry board, low humidity | Increase score depth, moisture conditioning | Visible defects on premium packaging |
Manual vs automated QC: a practical comparison
| Method | Прочность | Limit | Идеально подходит для |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual inspection | Flexible, detects appearance issues | Speed and consistency depend on operator | Short runs, luxury finishing |
| Inline sensors and vision systems | Fast, repeatable measurements | Requires calibration and maintenance | High-volume folding and gluing |
| Hybrid approach | Automated measurement plus human judgment | Needs clear responsibilities | Most export-oriented factories |
What overseas buyers should ask their supplier
- Which board grade is used, and what is the moisture specification?
- What is the target residual thickness at the score line?
- What squareness and panel deviation tolerances are guaranteed?
- Which adhesive is used, and what is its open time?
- What AQL level and inspection plan apply to the order?
- Is fiber tear testing performed, and what is the acceptance target?
- Can inspection records be provided with the shipment?
How these tolerances protect landed cost
Folding and gluing tolerances are not only a factory concern. Square boxes pack more efficiently, which can reduce carton void volume and freight cost. Consistent glue bonds reduce the risk of edge lifting after a long sea transit, which in turn reduces retailer returns and rework. On premium packaging, tighter score and glue control protects the surface finish that the brand is paying for.

ЧАСТО ЗАДАВАЕМЫЕ ВОПРОСЫ
What tolerance is normal for paper box folding?
For many rigid boxes, a panel deviation within ±0.2 mm and squareness within about 0.5 mm per meter are practical targets. The final tolerance depends on box size, board grade, and construction.
How is glue strength tested?
A fiber tear test is commonly used: the bonded seam is pulled apart and the percentage of fiber tear is recorded. A target of at least 80% fiber tear is a common acceptance criterion.
Can you provide inspection reports with the shipment?
Yes. Dimensional, glue, and appearance inspection records can be provided, and third-party testing through SGS can be arranged on request.
